DISCOVER ASIA

Asia is home to over 4.5 billion people and a quarter of the world’s countries—48 in total. With its rich diversity, it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most visited regions, attracting backpackers, food lovers, and culture seekers alike. When I think of Asia, I picture ancient temples, buzzing cities, white sandy beaches, and breathtaking untouched landscapes. No matter what kind of traveller you are, there’s something here for you.

In 2017, I had the incredible opportunity to work on a cruise ship for four months, sailing between China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. I was captivated by Shanghai’s towering skyscrapers, Taiwan’s hidden gems, and the tropical islands of Japan. Despite being neighbours, each country felt completely unique—offering its own distinct culture, history, and experiences.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

Asia is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on where you're going and what you want to experience. Weather plays a big role, and the region’s famous monsoon season has its pros and cons. On the downside, booking a honeymoon in Thailand only to have two weeks of non-stop rain isn’t ideal. But for budget travellers, the upside is clear—hotels and flights are often much cheaper during this time. The monsoon season varies by country, so it’s always worth checking before you book. That said, the weather can be unpredictable—you might prepare for downpours and not see a single drop!

Beyond the weather, timing your trip around festivals and events can make your experience even more special. Cherry blossom season in Japan, usually from late March to early April, is one of the most breathtaking times to visit. If you love cultural celebrations, consider planning your trip around Diwali in India or Chinese New Year, when the streets come alive with lights, parades, and fireworks. For beach lovers, the dry season in Southeast Asia (typically November to April) is perfect for island hopping and diving in crystal-clear waters.

No matter when you visit, Asia always has something incredible to offer, from vibrant city life and ancient temples to stunning landscapes and world-class cuisine.

TOP TIPS

If you're backpacking around Asia, pack light and stick to the essentials. A money belt is a great way to keep your cash, passport, and documents safe. Don’t forget insect repellent, a world plug adapter, and hand sanitiser. When travelling to multiple countries, make sure you have the right visas and vaccinations, and always drink bottled water to avoid getting sick.

It's also important to carry local currency, especially in rural areas where cash is preferred. Respect local customs, such as dress codes at religious sites, and be aware of tipping practices. Transportation can vary widely, so stay cautious in busy areas and keep an eye on your belongings.

Finally, for staying connected, buy a local SIM card to avoid high roaming charges. Always stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and carry a basic first-aid kit. Supporting eco-friendly businesses and reducing plastic use helps preserve Asia’s beauty for future travellers.
