DISCOVER NORTH AMERICA

North America is made up of 23 countries, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Greenland, with the Caribbean Islands adding to the mix. The region offers an incredible variety of landscapes, from mountains and deserts to stunning beaches, making it perfect for an adventure-packed trip. Whether you’re looking to breathe in the fresh air of national parks, take in the bright lights of New York City, or enjoy the excitement of Las Vegas, there’s truly something for everyone.

While many first-time backpackers head to South-East Asia, my journey took a different path. In the summer of 2015, I spent three months working and travelling across the USA. I worked at a summer camp in Pennsylvania, exploring 10 states along the way. I created a list of must-see places and embarked on an epic road trip, driving from Phoenix to Los Angeles and stopping at iconic spots like Yosemite National Park, the Grand Canyon, and San Francisco.

North America offers something special year-round, with each season providing its own unique experience. In New York City, you can visit during Christmas to admire the iconic Rockefeller tree, catch the NBA finals just before summer, or experience the stunning fall colours of Central Park. The city also comes alive in spring with outdoor festivals, making it a perfect time for those looking to explore without the summer crowds.

Canada boasts an incredible winter ski season, and if you venture far enough north, you might even witness the breathtaking Northern Lights. During warmer months, the Canadian Rockies are perfect for hiking, though it’s best to avoid peak summer due to high temperatures. The American Southwest is great in spring and fall, with the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley offering stunning scenery. Mexico is ideal between November and April, offering cultural experiences and beaches, while the Pacific Northwest shines in summer or quieter spring and fall months. Lastly, the Caribbean is best visited from December to April for perfect beach weather.

TOP TIPS

"Top tips" are very fitting for the USA, as you’ll need to tip at most restaurantsβ€”15% on top of your bill is the standard. Always check your bill to ensure gratuity isn’t already included. It’s also essential to apply for your visas in advanceβ€”an ESTA for the USA and a TRV for Canada, if needed. Make sure you carry your travel documents with you at all times, as security checks can be frequent.

For getting around, public transport is the best option in major cities like New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami. However, if you're planning a road trip or travelling between states, renting a car is more convenient. Anyone over 21 can rent a car in the USA, though those aged between 21 and 24 will usually face an extra fee. Don’t forget to check for additional costs, like insurance, GPS rental, or tolls, as they can add up quickly. Also, if you're not familiar with the local roads, consider downloading a navigation app ahead of time. If you prefer not to rent a car, ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft are widely available, especially in larger cities and can be a more affordable option for shorter trips.
