DISCOVER THE CARIBBEAN

The Caribbean – the ultimate paradise destination. Known for its white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, mouthwatering cuisine, and the sound of reggae in the air, the Caribbean is a dream come true for many. With over 7,000 islands, but only 26 official countries, each island carries its own unique history and cultural influence. Choosing which one to visit first can be the toughest part!

In September 2015, I spent a week in Barbados with my sister, and it truly felt like paradise. Having just completed three months of travelling across the USA, I flew straight to the island to meet her. Despite being on a budget, we made the most of every moment and saw all the incredible sights this vibrant island had to offer.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

The best time to visit the Caribbean is between December and April. During these months, you can expect warm, sunny days with less humidity—ideal for escaping the European winter and soaking up some sunshine. However, for budget travellers, the off-season is much cheaper, offering more affordable options for accommodation and activities. Some islands in the Caribbean are less affected by hurricanes, so you can still enjoy a tropical getaway even during the off-season.

It’s important to keep in mind that the hurricane season runs from June to November. While the average of 13 tropical storms each year might not sound like much, the potential for devastation is significant. The Caribbean heavily relies on tourism, especially from cruise ships and luxury resorts, so visiting these destinations after a storm can provide much-needed support as they rebuild. These resilient nations, though, always bounce back, and their natural beauty remains as stunning as ever.

TOP TIPS

While the Caribbean is generally safe for travellers, it’s always wise to take precautions, especially in some areas where crime can be a concern, particularly with robberies. Luxury resorts tend to be secure, but if you're venturing beyond the resort, it's best to avoid walking around neighbourhoods or public beaches at night, as this can increase your risk. Stick to well-lit, populated areas, and always use reputable transportation.

Insect repellent is a must, especially during the hotter months when humidity is high, and bugs thrive. Make sure to pack a good repellent to avoid bites, as mosquitoes can carry diseases like dengue and Zika in some areas.

Finally, if you're planning to explore beyond the beaches, don't forget to take sunscreen, lightweight clothing, and a hat to protect yourself from the strong Caribbean sun. It’s also helpful to learn a few basic phrases in Spanish or French, as many islands have strong cultural ties to these languages. Whether you're relaxing at a resort or exploring the islands, a little preparation can make your Caribbean adventure even more enjoyable!
